Intervention Program
|
The Intervention Program is a collaboration between the Miamisburg Youth Center and the Miamisburg Schools. For nine years this program has been serving suspended students in grades 6-12. The Intervention Program began as an experiment with one year funding from United Way. It was so successful that the Miamisburg School board decided to fund the program so it could continue. The program is held in the mornings at the Miamisburg Youth Center. It begins at 8:00am and ends at 1:30PM. The program consists of four components. These include critical thinking skills/decision making, community service, counseling, and schoolwork. The Program Director leads all of the components except schoolwork. The student’s work is sent from the schools and a teacher from the High School oversees this portion of the program. The teacher tutors each student individually giving them the time and attention many of them need. The Intervention Program has proven to be an important part of what Miamisburg City Schools has to offer its students. On average, approximately 300 students per year attend the program. Benefits from the program include, the students are able to keep up with their schoolwork and are not counted absent. If they serve a traditional out of school suspension they are counted absent and are not allowed to make up any missed work. Additionally, many of these students, although not all, have personal issues that can be addressed during counseling. Appropriate referrals or other action is then taken if needed. The Director works closely with school personnel to best meet the needs of each student. Of course, the benefits for the schools are the students get the help and support they need, they are current with class work on their return, and the attendance rates reflect participation in the program. The Intervention Program fills a need for the students, the schools, the community, and allows the Miamisburg Youth Center to provide a service at a time of day when the building would otherwise go unused. The Youth Center is honored to be partners with Miamisburg Schools to meet the needs of the students. |
